The “Cherub” began replacing the “Flying Death Head” on cemetery markers around the 1760’s. It remained popular until around 1800 when it was itself replaced with the “Urn and Willow” carvings. These carvings were often done by “part-timers” who were skilled in other trades, but not necessarily as skilled in carving headstones.
